O Dear...

If this is a career, I am really, really disturbed right now.

Worst job ever? Spill it. Remembering THAT has GOT to make whatever you're doing now sound LOADS better!

Waitress-the Rio,Vegas. Uniform consists of black thong, black bra, and what can only be described as a see through lace napkin disguised as a mini skirt.

Not only do they serve drinks to the tables, but at 11 am, one of the waitresses does a chair dance, on top of some slot machines, for fat truckers and grandmas blowing their social security checks. 11 AM!

I almost asked, "when did you live in Vegas?" Silly.

How "gutting fish in Alaska" is about on par with "door-to-door pest control sales," I don't know. But it is slightly more physically challenging and smellier.

14-18 hour days, 7 days a week, knee deep in fish guts, getting yelled at in Tagolog, and full-body raingear, waking up wiht hands and arms cramped in agony and CRAWLING for asprin...That's an experience I will NEVER forget.

selling pest control = the worst summer of my life.

I wasn't a Rio waitress, (though I COULD finally put my chair dancing skills to mad use) My co-worker and I were complaining about our jobs, we saw the waitress and he said "well, I guess there are worse jobs out there" - your post was timely.

They always are...Timeless.

You did NOT sell Pest Control!!! Unfathomable, sweet Caroline! ...How do you think I finally overcame my fear of talking to strangers? And with great gusto---

i thought i'd point out that criminal is also a career (as in career criminal). so not all careers are created equal. and that career probably sucks. unless you're really good at it and don't get caught. oh, and if you have no morals or ethics.

I think of the old adage that "the world needs ditch diggers too."

Not everyone can be a doctor or a lawyer. And if they could... then who would serve up our burgers in this strange world filled with doctors and lawyers?

pest control sales as a 19 year old in the ghetto goes down as the most horrible, out of character, scary, bizarre, yet interesting job i've ever had. try trying to sell someone pest control while you are blushing from head to toe from nervousness/shyness and shaking from the attempted drive by you just saw.

also bad: living right off the worst street in east oakland with hookers LITERALLY a few blocks away on your street corner.

You gutted fish in Alaska for a summer? Wow. I wouldn't have guessed that. Your stock just jumped.

The summer after I graduated from high school, I worked at a steel mill for a summer where one of my more joyous tasks required me to don a white chemical suit, and crawl into thigh-deep black, stinky steel by-product where it was ultra hot and ultra humid owing to the red hot steel that was recently there, and the water they pump onto it to cool it off and the resulting steam. Not quite as hot and humid as a steam room, but getting close. -No exaggeration, either. My job was to take a shovel and scoop the sludge and slag into a 5 gallon bucket, and pass it up and out of the hole I was in to someone who would dump it into a drum for it to be carried away. I had to do that b/c the drainage canals were always getting clogged with slag and toothpaste-consistency muck, and if I didn't do that, the coolant water would flood out. On top of the humidity, which one time made me sweat so much that I literally looked like I had been in a swimming pool in my clothes, the smell almost made me vomit once. If I had any doubts about whether going to college was for me, they were summarily eradicated by that job.

And they say child labour is over. Celearly it lives on and proves to be quite lucrative...

-And, Dall, I DID vomit once on the "slime line"- where all the itty-bitty fish-parts not suitable for eating are sifted into catfood. YUM.

Being no stranger to fish and their guts, I'm sure this was unholy. Like I said, I tip my hat to you for that one.
