Practice.

Here's the boat you have to take to get to the villages surrounding Lake Atitlan...By the way, that's a live chicken inside her bag. That's why she's laughing so hard...I picked up my Spanish tapes to practice on the plane ride over. I have also registered for Spanish classes in Lake Atitlan; should I choose to live with a host family or in an apartment, or in a room of my own? Suggestions?

My suggestion- live by yourself, you never know what you're oging to get living with a host family.

Excellent point, Kory. Excellent point.
What draws me to "host families" is that OTHER students share housing with you, which I thought would be a good community feel. Also, host families would expose me to more Spanish, whereas living solo would expose me to more music on iPod (that's right, I'm taking my boyfriend with me!).

Are you kidding? This is a no-brainer.... live by yourself. End of debate.

I must be a total dork, I'd go host family all the way. You just get an insight of a whole people/culture/language if you are "on the inside." True, the situation may turn out completely unliveable and horrifying, but you could also make friends for life.

Could you bail if it went south?

Are you seriously leaving us?? ): I'd start with host family, then decide to leave if you could. Plus they'd force you to actively speak the language and familarize you with the surroundings and culture. And who knows, they could be cool.

Turns out, they do not currently have any host families, so I suppose my choice has been made for me. I just would like to get to know other students and practice more while I'm at "home."

I leave tonight!!!
