Harold and Maude is one of my favourite feel-great movies ever. Cat Stevens is one of my favourite songwriters ever. And since I spend most of my life in the car, when I heard that familiar, "ooh, baby, baby it's a wild world," I had a good 4 minutes of loud singing and feeling good going on all along Beach Blvd in Anaheim.
This is my favourite song from the film. But the entire soundtrack is all Cat and it's ALL good. It's about a young man who was given everything but has nothing to live for, and he meets an old woman who lives to value every living thing. It's a beautiful story.
I just don't remember this many car chases.
Other soundtracks worth having? DISH IT. You know how iPod and I love a good mix tape.

Wes Anderson always has great soundtracks.
And Quentin Tarentino. I'm scared of him, but boy, does that guy know how to put together a good playlist.
And anything by Hans Zimmer is always really good, too.
Ones that come to mind are "Once" which... essentially has the whole movie on one CD. And the other is "Wicker Park" I have never seen the movie. I just bought the soundtrack for the Postal Service version of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds." But it turns out that the soundtrack is all around pretty great.

I have never seen Harold and Maude, but I do love me some Cat Stevens, so I think I know what I'll be watching this weekend.

I'm just sharing that, last night, when I played a brand-new song by Jose Gonzales on the Red Eye, someone called in, swearing up and down (and, yes, he was swearing and, yes, it was drunkenly) that it was Cat Stevens I'd just played. After some pretty amusing back and forth, I had to relent and say, "Yeah, I guess they do have some similar qualities." He hung up pretty disappointed that he was wrong.

ah the Reality Bites soundtrack...i still like to pull that one out now and then.
Wicker Park WAS a great soundtrack and I too never saw the movie. I was so excited to get that Phil Collins cover because Keith Paugh and I had scene The Postal Service do it live and had falled in l-o-v-e.
Will I get made fun of for saying that I still pull the "braveheart" soundtrack out from time to time?
the Bodysong soundtrack by a Mr. Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.
the reason Wes Anderson's soundtracks are so good is that Mark Mothersbaugh (formerly of Devo) puts them together. and they are fantastic.
that's also why Grosse Point Blank is so good (Mr. Joe Strummer put it together). the High Fidelity soundtrack is amazing too if you're in a "Cusack's in the movie" mood.
and Dyslexic Heart is maybe the third or fourth best song on the excellent Singles OST. Seasons and Would are the must haves there.
oh, and you always need a little Flash Gordon soundtrack by Queen. he'll save everyone of us...
As previously mentioned, Once is fantastic. I think it is my favorite soundtrack of all time and only gets better each time I listen to it. I also second the suggestion of the Singles soundtrack. PJ, Mother Love Bone, Paul Westerberg. Long live the Seattle sound. Plus the track by Smashing Pumkins - Drown is fantastic as well.
Harold and Maude is one of my favorite movies of all time! I'm still searching for a jaguar hearse. Rushmore also has a great soundtrack which BTW has a few Cat Stevens classics. Also, the Virgin Suicides score by Air.

I listened to that tape so much, I wore it out. TWICE. It was my first CD (along with The Beautiful South) when I got my first CD player. sigh. I still love you, Danny Zuko.
